Malgré son absence, Michael Jackson recevait un World Award 2002 lors de la cérémonie des World Awards 2002 qui se tenait à Vienne en Autriche. C'est Mikhail Gorbachev qui a présenté le King Of Pop en ces termes : "Mes chers amis, le prochain gagnant de notre prix est incroyablement populaire, et vous pouvez dire beaucoup sur lui. Mais vous pouvez aussi simplement dire son nom. Le prochain gagnant de notre prix est Michael Jackson"
Suite à cette annonce, une vidéo d'images de clips de Michael Jackson a été diffusée et il a été annoncé que le King Of Pop avait annulé au dernier moment sa venue mais qu'il avait tenu à envoyer une vidéo avec le discours suivant : "C'est un grand honneur pour moi d'avoir été choisi par Mr Gorbachev et le jury des "World Arts Award 2002". Cette année, le thème des Worls Awards est 'la paix et la tolérance'. Ces valeurs sont très importantes à mes yeux. Du plus profond de mon coeur, de mon esprit, je reste uni avec vous pour la paix, l'amour et la tolérance dans ce monde. Je voudrais remercier : Mr. Günther Stampf, Mr. Georg Kindel et le Président Mikhail Gorbachev. Je vous aime, merci beaucoup."
